Recently I shared a clip on social media about whether robots could be made in the image of God (from episode 31 of Cabernet and Pray). In response to that, I received an overwhelming number of comments online. Now in Episode 33, I reflect on what I learned from these reactions.
This leads me to the broader issue—the continuous pattern of exclusion within Christianity. Historically, theology has been wielded to justify exclusion, whether it was against women's involvement in the church, during the Civil War when the church defended slavery, or more contemporary issues involving the LGBTQ+ community. And that doesn't even include the other examples I believe are yet to come. It reminds us how theological interpretations can be manipulated to endorse exclusionary practices.
In envisioning a more inclusive Christianity, I offer three suggestions:
- At a minimum, Christians should WANT for God to include as much of creation in salvation as possible
- Inclusion doesn't negate redemption
- Even if we're wrong in the specifics, inclusive Christianity fosters a more Jesus-looking faith
If I'm going to fall short, I would rather be inclusively wrong than exclusively wrong. It's better to include too many people rather than exclude those who might belong. This inclusivity enriches our perspective within Christianity, challenging us to break away from the quick tendency to exclude different groups or entities from participating. It fosters a vision where more of creation is included in the notion of salvation, aligning closely with the values and image of Jesus.
Lastly, I briefly mentioned in the episode a wine and whiskey trip in Oregon. For those interested, it’s happening February 21-23, offering an environment ripe for intimate, faith-centered discussions augmented by some excellent wine and whiskey tastings. Click here to find out more.
I encourage you to explore new wine varieties, like the Lambrusco, which I enjoyed in this episode. Just as we explore new flavors and experiences, let's also embrace new thoughts and engage in the hard conversations about faith, technology, ethics, and inclusivity.
